The Manual
Here’s a piece I worked on for the first issue of The Manual, ‘a beautifully crafted journal that takes a fresh look, in print, at the maturing of the discipline and profession of web design.’
My illustration accompanies an article by Dan Rubin about the constraints of ‘the page’ in web design, and encourages web designers to think outside the box to realise new possibilities of the internet through web design.
The idea behind my piece was web designers tunneling up through a dense pile of ‘pages’ to reach the top and ultimately discover enlightenment.
Much like the web designers in my piece, I had to struggle quite a bit with this one. After several different roughs however, I finally went with this idea and luckily I think it turned out alright!

Despite the struggle, I’m very grateful to be part of such a brilliant project and I thoroughly recommend you get your copy HERE where you can also find out more about The Manual! Major props as well go to Jez Burrows, Art Director and Designer behind this beautiful book.

Distant LandsSo, a new country and a new studio.
I’ve been living in Berlin for the last few months and it’s been a blast. Despite the dismal summer weather, I’ve loved pretty much everything about it, in particular the abundance of ping pong tables and the chilli-cheeseburgers.
It’s also allowed me to set up studio with my illustrator sister, Heather Gatley, and it’s been working out a treat. Definitely beats working in solitude, and as you can see from the photo above, it’s a lovely place to create.
Inevitably, work was put a little on the back burner for a while as I familiarised myself with my new surroundings. Hence the lack of activity here (for which I apologise)… But fear not! I’m now back in the saddle and exciting new projects are underway, hopefully of which I can share with you soon!
Another very exciting development over the last couple of months has been joining the lovely folk at Agent Pekka, who now represent me in Northern Europe. Pekka are a Finnish agency, representing a broad range of incredible illustrators, so to be asked by them to be on the agency is both brilliant and scary. I met up with them in Helsinki the other day and they made me feel very welcome, so I look forward to working with them on some exciting projects in the future!

‘Make Friends with the Neighbours’
Hey folks!
So it has been a very long while since my last post. For this I can only apologise.
Anyway here’s something I did for YCN’s latest issue of ‘Ideas Illustrated’. I was asked to give a piece of advice based on the theme of ‘relocation’ and illustrate it. I went with ‘Make Friends with the Neighbours’, and I was pretty chuffed with how the final illustration turned out. It’s very rare for me to be happy with both concept and aesthetic, so this made for a very pleasant change.
Keeping with the theme of relocation, I’ve done some of my own relocating recently. A few weeks ago I moved to Berlin, and it’s a blast! More on this, and photos of my current working studio to follow.
Bis später!

The Times’ Eureka Magazine
A couple of weeks ago I had a double page spread in the space edition of Eureka, sorry it’s taken me so long to put it up here! The piece was supposed to show how people in the year 2050 might spend their holidays on giant cruise ships orbitting the earth.
This was definitely the most fun I’ve had working on an illustration in a while, although the stupid number of photoshop layers I was dealing with towards the end was less fun for my computer. I was happy with the end result though, and it was a big relief when I sent it off!

Pan Macmillan
Wrap around cover and title page illustrations (scroll down) for Pan Macmillan’s Autumn/Winter catalogue of new titles. The illustrations were based around the idea of a red book travelling around the world, visiting different cities where Pan Macmillan have their headquarters. A lovely little project to be a part of, art directed and designed by It’s Nice That.

See my website for photographs of the finished catalogue.
